National Grid
Sponsors of Energy Innovation Award
National Grid sits at the heart of Britain’s energy system. The individual companies in their group run the networks and infrastructure that connect millions of people to the electricity they use every day.
Their regulated businesses own and develop the high voltage electricity transmission (ET) network in England and Wales, and the electricity distribution (ED) network in the Midlands, South West England and South Wales.
Operating separately from these core regulated units, National Grid Ventures (NGV) focusses on competitive markets, investing in energy projects, technologies and partnerships such as electricity interconnectors.
Much of the UK’s electricity network was built in the 1960s when the country was reliant on fossil fuels. Today, the UK needs to connect huge volumes of renewable power to the network, to help deliver the government’s energy security strategy and net zero targets and to support the nation’s transition to a cleaner, more affordable, and more independent energy system. This forms part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the network in a generation.
National Grid Electricity Transmission, owns, builds and maintains the electricity transmission network in England and Wales. It is National Grid Electricity Transmission that has been developing the plans for the Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement.

PetansItem Link
Charity Sponsor
On the 3rd December 1975, the same year that commercial oil production began in the UK, The Petroleum Training Association North Sea (PETANS) was registered with the UK Charities Commission.
– Its objective; to provide training for all persons employed in the petroleum industry in the north sea area.
PETANS were one of two Offshore Training Associations in the UK, the role of Petans; to identify the industries training needs. Since the very beginning of oil and gas production in the UK Petans has provided professional safety, emergency response and survival training for the offshore energy sector both in the UK and worldwide.
Our original scope was to support the petroleum industry with their training needs, today we welcome and train delegates from all areas of the energy sector and beyond including Local Authority Fire and Rescue Services, Nuclear Power Stations, MOD, and Industrial Fire Teams.
To support our charitable status and the community and region we serve we offer several grants. Discounting entry level basic safety courses to those that are unemployed (and receiving state benefit), on a resettlement programme with HM Armed forces or on a government recognised apprenticeship.
On a regular basis we engage with schools, colleges, community groups and trusts to provide work experience, taster days, internships, and site tours.
As with all charities we are grateful for the commitment of our Trustees who give their time, expertise and knowledge freely. Their support for what we do and the industry and business knowledge that they share is demonstrated by the milestone that we have reached.
PETANS first site was in Lowestoft, at Lake Lothing. Courses were developed in conjunction with Lowestoft College. We moved to our current site next to Norwich International Airport in 1985, before fully developing the site to include a swimming pool, additional helideck, and firefighting modules in 1995.
Equipment and facilities evolved, improved and transitioned for training as much as industry. Our investment in responding to these changes is evident throughout our site. Adapting and committing to green infrastructure – solar panel developments, a water treatment plant to recycle water for firefighting, and state of the art gas and dual firefighting modules and props are a few of the investments we have made over the years.
Training began in very different times, and we proudly see how Petans have been at the heart of its evolution. As a charity we are driven by ensuring our sector has the best possible chance of keeping the workforce safe.
Working with our Charitable Trustees we continually review and invest in our resources, facilities and equipment to make sure that we can provide high quality and valued training for the next 50 years.
